LCourse Description

 

In Chemistry, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem-solving. Students study a variety of topics that include characteristics of matter, use of the Periodic Table, development of atomic theory and chemical bonding, chemical stoichiometry, gas laws, solution chemistry, thermochemistry, and nuclear chemistry. Students will investigate how chemistry is an integral part of our daily lives. Texas law requires 40% field and laboratory experience during the course.

 

 

Notebook Preparation

 

Students will be expected to keep a SEPARATE folder specifically for Chemistry.

 

  1. Notes, Handouts & Class Activities

  2. Foldable Notes

  3. Homework

  4. Lab Activities/Reports

  5. Quizzes/Tests

**Alternative Tabs Will Be Discussed!**

 

Random notebook checks/quizzes will be given throughout the year and will count as a quiz grade

 

 

Grading Policy

 

Lab 20%

Formative: 40

Summative: 60

 

 

TESTS 40%

QUIZZES (Lowest will be dropped) 15%

LAB REPORTS 25%

Notes and Notebook 20%

 

  • Tests will always be announced a week  prior to being given. 

    • Test corrections are will count for extra point

  • Mid-terms will be cumulative 

  • Quizzes are meant to frequently test understanding and may or (most likely) may not be scheduled with advanced notice.  (Yes, you will have pop quizzes!)  

    • Bonus points are available on every test and can include anything previously covered.

 

Lecture/Class notes

You will be taking notes in class and will be responsible for the information in the notes. The power points used for the notes will be posted on my page under the PowerPoint section. Make sure to complete the notes you miss during class. 

 

Lab Safety

Each student must arrive for lab days in appropriate attire:

  • Long pants or skirt (must cover and extend past your knees when in a seated position)

  • Closed toes shoes

  • Goggles and aprons will be provided 

students not able to change will be precluded from participating in the experiment and will receive a 0% for the experiment. 

 

 

Late Work Policy- Assignments are due on the determined date. It is your responsibility to manage your due dates and be timely in your work. Teacher will discuss excused absence protocol with the students.
